Affordable Housing for Women Veterans
The lack of affordable housing is cited as the No. 1 unmet need of our Nations Veterans. Safe, supportive, drug and alcohol free affordable housing is a key component in preventing homelessness within our veteran community.
For our women veterans it is nearly the nonexistence of affordable, gender specific, safe and supportive housing. Research also states our women veterans want and desire the one common thread of social interaction with other women veterans when looking for and receiving services.
Our objective is to find our women veterans before they become homeless and provide them information on available resources and services.
In collaboration with Community Housing Partnership we opened Mary Ellen’s Place for single women veterans in May 2011. It is an affordable, safe, supportive, drug, alcohol and violence free home assisting the residents in changing their lives through obtaining stability and working towards the life they once cherished and deserve.
